Aerospace Internship Resume: 2026 Guide With Examples

I read aerospace internship postings for a living and I have looked at more student resumes than is probably good for me, and the thing that surprises me is how consistently the same document keeps arriving. It is neatly formatted, it is technically accurate, it lists every course the person has taken, and it says almost nothing about what they can actually do. The student who built a working engine test stand in a car park somehow ends up with a resume that reads exactly like the student who did not.

So rather than another list of tips, here is your resume drawn the way a checker would mark up a drawing, with the six zones that carry the weight and a numbered callout for each one. The sections below follow the same numbering.

The first pass is a rejection, not a reading

The most quoted number in resume advice comes from an eye tracking study that Ladders ran in 2018, which found recruiters spent an average of 7.4 seconds on an initial screen, up from six seconds when they ran the same study in 2012. It is worth knowing that the sample was small, around thirty recruiters, and that the figure gets repeated far more confidently than the underlying study justifies.

What holds up better than the exact number is the pattern. That first pass is not an evaluation, it is a sort, and the study found that the resumes recruiters lingered on shared a set of unglamorous traits: clear section headings, bold titles and dates, short bulleted statements and visible white space. The ones that lost attention were cluttered, had little breathing room, ran multiple columns, and buried achievements inside long sentences.

The practical consequence is that your resume has two audiences with different amounts of patience, and you have to satisfy both. The seven second reader needs a shape they can parse without effort. The engineer who actually reads it, later and more slowly, needs the substance. Optimising for one at the expense of the other is the most common failure I see.

Redline note. The single highest value edit for most students is not adding anything. It is deleting the objective statement, the skills bar charts, the photo, and the list of every course you have ever passed, and letting the space that frees up go to your projects.

What they are actually looking for

Before the zones, it helps to know what the people reading are told to look for. When NACE asked employers what attributes they want to see evidence of on a resume, close to ninety percent named the ability to solve problems and close to eighty percent named teamwork, with written communication, initiative, work ethic and technical skills all sitting at seventy percent or above. Their more recent Job Outlook 2026 update found the same three at the top, with more than half of employers naming ten or more skills they want evidence of.

Notice that every one of those is a thing you demonstrate rather than a thing you claim. Nobody has ever been hired because their resume contained the words strong team player. The resume that wins on this chart is the one where a reader can see the problem, see what you did about it, and see how it turned out.

1. Header and eligibility

Name, phone, email, LinkedIn and GitHub if it has anything on it, in one tidy line or two. No address beyond city and state, no photo, no objective statement.

Then the line that is specific to this industry and that a startling number of students leave off. A large share of aerospace and defense roles require United States citizenship or permanent residency for export control reasons, and recruiters filtering a pile of applications are looking for that answer early. If you are eligible, say so plainly, in the form of a short line noting that you are a US citizen and eligible for a security clearance. If you already hold one, that goes near the top too, with the level and the year it was granted.

If you are not eligible, this is not a reason to give up, but it does mean your time is better spent on commercial space, aviation, satellite operators and the many suppliers whose work is not export controlled, rather than on prime defense contractors who will screen you out at the first gate.

2. Education, and only the coursework that earns its place

Degree, institution, expected graduation month and year, and your GPA if it is above roughly 3.3. If it is below that, leave it off and let the projects carry you, since an absent GPA prompts a question while a weak one prompts a decision.

Relevant coursework is worth four or five entries at most, and only the ones that map to the job you are applying for. Compressible aerodynamics, spacecraft attitude dynamics, control systems and finite element methods tell a reader something. Introduction to engineering and technical writing do not. If you took a graduate level course as an undergraduate, say so, because that is a real signal and it costs you three words.

3. Projects and competition teams, which is the whole game

For a student with no industry experience this is the largest section on the page and it should look like it. Formula SAE, Design Build Fly, collegiate rocketry teams flying at the Spaceport America Cup, CubeSat programmes, high altitude balloon groups, hybrid engine projects, robotics teams, anything you built in a garage that came apart in an interesting way. Personal projects count entirely, and in some ways count more, because nobody assigned them to you.

Write each one the way you would write a job. A title that names your role rather than the club, the dates, and then two or three bullets that describe what you personally owned. The most common mistake is describing the team's achievement instead of yours, which leaves the reader unable to tell whether you led the structures subteam or attended meetings.

Include the failures. An engine that burned through a throat, a parachute that deployed at the wrong altitude, a wing that failed short of its predicted load, all of these are more interesting than a clean success, provided you follow with what you found and what you changed. Aerospace is an industry organised around understanding failure, and a student who can describe a root cause is describing exactly the skill the job requires.

4. Bullets that survive a redline

Here is the bullet that lands on my desk over and over, and the same content rewritten so it does some work.

The pattern underneath is simple enough to apply to anything. Start with a verb that describes what you did rather than what you were near, name the physical scale of the thing so the reader can picture it, say what you changed, and finish with a number. The number does not have to be impressive. Eighteen percent, four hundred grams, three days, six iterations, all of these are better than no number, because a number tells the reader you measured something, and measuring things is the job.

If you cannot find a number, use a consequence instead. The part passed its qualification vibration test. The design was adopted for the next vehicle. The procedure is still in use. Those are outcomes even when they are not quantities.

5. Skills, meaning tools rather than adjectives

List what you can operate. CAD packages by name, so SolidWorks, NX, CATIA or Creo rather than the word CAD. Analysis tools such as Ansys, Abaqus, Nastran, Star CCM or OpenFOAM. Languages and libraries, so Python with NumPy and SciPy, MATLAB and Simulink, C or C++ for embedded work. Test and lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, strain gauges, thermocouples, data acquisition systems and load frames.

Manual skills belong here too and students consistently undersell them. Manual machining, TIG welding, composite layup, soldering to a standard, cleanroom experience and a general aviation licence all mean something concrete to a hiring manager who needs somebody who can be useful in a high bay rather than only at a desk.

What does not belong is any attempt to rate yourself. Skill bars, star ratings and percentage proficiencies are unverifiable, they eat space, and they tend to make the layout worse. If you want to indicate depth, do it by showing where you used the tool in your project bullets, which is evidence rather than assertion.

6. One page, one column, sent as a PDF

As a student your resume is one page. Not because of a rule handed down from somewhere, but because a second page as an undergraduate is almost always padding, and padding dilutes the first page that actually gets read.

Use a single column. Two column layouts and sidebars look designed, and they performed poorly with human readers in the Ladders study, which found that cluttered layouts and multiple columns lost attention. Send a PDF unless the application specifically asks otherwise, name the file with your own name in it rather than resume final v3, and keep the fonts ordinary.

Tailoring, without rewriting the whole thing every time

Seventy percent of employers told NACE they now use some form of skills based hiring, up from sixty five percent the year before, and fewer than forty percent of graduating seniors had even heard the term. In practice this means the posting is a fairly literal description of what somebody will screen you against, and the words in it are the words worth using.

You do not need a bespoke document per application. Keep one strong master version, then adjust three things for each posting: the order of your project entries so the most relevant sits first, the coursework line, and the vocabulary in your skills section so that it matches the terminology the posting uses. If the job says thermal analysis and your bullet says heat transfer modelling, change your bullet, since you are describing the same work and there is no prize for using different words than the person hiring.

Redline note. Do not invent tools you have opened once. Aerospace interviews are technical, specific and conducted by people who use the software daily, and the fastest way to end a promising conversation is to list Ansys and then be unable to describe a mesh you built.

What to cut

The objective statement, which tells the reader something they already know. The photo, which is standard in some countries and a liability in United States applications. Your high school, once you are past your first year. Every course you have taken rather than the few that matter. Skill rating graphics. References available on request, a phrase that has never once been necessary. Anything in a second column. And the words hardworking, detail oriented, passionate and team player, which appear on so many resumes that they have stopped carrying information entirely.

What goes in the space you free up is more evidence of things you have built, which is the only thing on the page that is genuinely yours.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an aerospace internship resume be?

One page for undergraduates and for most master's students. A second page is worth it only when you have several relevant industry roles or published work, and even then the first page carries the decision.

Should I put my GPA on my resume?

Include it if it is roughly 3.3 or higher, and leave it off otherwise. Some large employers do set a stated minimum, frequently 3.0, in which case the posting will say so and you should follow it.

Do I need experience to get an aerospace internship?

No, but you need evidence. Competition teams, personal builds, undergraduate research and coursework projects all count, and a well described rocketry project will outperform an unrelated retail job every time.

Should I mention citizenship or a security clearance?

What should I write if my project failed?

Write the failure and the root cause. A bullet that names what broke, what the investigation found and what changed as a result demonstrates exactly the engineering judgement these teams are hiring for.
